Var’kusen

Behind the sound
Var'kusen began with Veyl Mercer and Nyx Vane writing deliberately uncomfortable, rhythm-heavy songs together. Draxen Coil gave the material the physical rhythmic foundation it needed, while Raze Hollow pushed the sound toward industrial noise and experimental low end. Kaia Voss completed the lineup and changed the band's possibilities by introducing a second lead voice, synthesizers and atmospheric programming. The project originally operated under the name Korvus, but the five members later rebuilt its identity as Var'kusen. The change marked a new chapter rather than a simple rename: darker, heavier and more cohesive, with contrasting male/female vocals at the center of the sound.
Var'kusen combines nu-metal, alternative metal, industrial metal, electronic textures, groove-heavy rhythms and unsettling cinematic ambience. Low-tuned guitars and distorted bass collide with hybrid acoustic/electronic percussion, damaged samples and synth layers. Veyl Mercer's rhythmic cleans, whispers and screams contrast with Kaia Voss's haunting melodic vocals, giving the band a two-voice identity that can move from intimate and vulnerable to violent and overwhelming.

Individual voices. Shared vision.

Lead Vocals / Frontman
Veyl grew up feeling more comfortable around music than people. As a teenager he was drawn to heavy alternative music because it gave anger, isolation and frustration somewhere to go. He never followed a conventional vocal-training path; his voice developed through garages, rehearsal rooms and small venues, becoming a mix of deep rhythmic delivery, whispers, vulnerable cleans and explosive screams. After several short-lived projects, he began writing with Nyx Vane. Nyx built riffs around the unusual rhythms of Veyl's voice, creating the foundation that would eventually become Var'kusen. Veyl's lyrics focus on manipulation, anxiety, isolation, betrayal, self-hatred and the masks people build around themselves.

Lead Guitar / Backing Vocals / Principal Riff Writer
Nyx became frustrated with guitar music that valued technical display over atmosphere. He gravitated toward low tunings, dissonance, silence, scraping strings, harmonics, feedback and riffs built around rhythm rather than traditional solos. After meeting Veyl through the underground music scene, the pair began writing with little more than guitar, vocals and a drum machine. Nyx discovered that leaving space in his riffs allowed Veyl's vocal rhythms to function like another percussion instrument. That idea remains central to Var'kusen. He is one of the band's principal songwriters and often creates the musical skeleton that the other members later tear apart and rebuild.

Female Lead Vocals / Synths / Atmospheric Programming
Kaia brought a completely different musical language into Var'kusen. Her background was rooted in piano, electronic music, atmospheric production and layered vocals rather than metal. Veyl first heard her on a rough recording built around voice, piano and distorted ambience. What began as a guest appearance became permanent. Kaia developed into Veyl's vocal counterpart: where his voice often represents rage and collapse, hers can sound detached, vulnerable, threatening or hauntingly beautiful. She also contributes synthesizers, ambient textures and vocal manipulation, helping the band move naturally between crushing heaviness and eerie melodic passages.

Bass Guitar / Backing Vocals / Noise & Industrial Textures
Raze came from punk, industrial and experimental projects and had little interest in simply following the guitar. He processes bass through distortion, filters and effects until it can become both a low-end weapon and a source of noise. During his first rehearsal with the group, he rewrote several existing bass parts without asking; the band kept his versions. His approach became one of Var'kusen's defining traits. Raze also pushed the group deeper into industrial experimentation through damaged samples, mechanical sounds, feedback and deliberately degraded audio. His interplay with Draxen gives the band much of its physical groove.

Drums / Percussion / Electronic Percussion
Draxen began as a conventional drummer but became obsessed with combining acoustic drums and electronic percussion. His kit evolved into a hybrid system of traditional drums, triggers, pads and sampled sounds. His style is brutally economical: a simple kick-and-snare pattern can suddenly fracture into syncopated grooves before dropping back into something almost primitive. Draxen and Raze form the rhythmic backbone of Var'kusen, with the bass often locking to the kick rather than the guitar. He also contributes metallic impacts, distorted electronic hits and processed percussion to the band's recordings.
