Heartland Valley

Different Paths. Same Country. Heartland Valley.

Heartland Valley band: Connor Vice, Ella James, Jax Turner, Matt “Booma” Harris and Ricky Cole.

Behind the sound

The story.

Heartland Valley is an Australian country band built around real stories, regional characters and the landscapes that connect them. Their sound blends classic Australian country storytelling with modern country production, acoustic warmth and pub-rock energy.

From sugar-cane summers and red-dirt cattle country to highways, truck stops, family memories and Saturday nights, Heartland Valley writes about everyday lives without sanding off the rough edges. At the centre is lead singer Connor Vice, whose grounded storytelling is supported by Ella James' warm harmonies, Jax Turner's expressive lead guitar, Matt “Booma” Harris' steady low end and Ricky Cole's road-tested rhythm.

The band's identity is unmistakably Australian: roads, farms, cattle stations, cane fields, old utes, trucks, working towns, pubs and wide-open landscapes. Their songs can be heartfelt, nostalgic, humorous, gritty or celebratory, but the focus stays on people and stories that feel lived-in and real.

Connor Vice

Connor Vice

Lead Vocalist / Rhythm Guitar

Read the story

Connor grew up on a cattle property outside Tamworth, where long days, dusty roads and weekend rodeos shaped the stories he would later turn into songs. He started playing guitar at twelve, first around family barbecues and campfires, then in pubs and local country competitions. Years travelling regional Australia gave him a catalogue of stories about truck drivers, stockmen, families, heartbreak and the humour found in ordinary life. Those stories became the foundation of Heartland Valley.

Grounded, genuine and quietly charismatic. Connor is the band's emotional centre, equally at home with a rowdy pub chorus or a stripped-back story song. His stage presence is tough but approachable, with dry Australian humour and a direct connection to the crowd.

Ella James

Ella James

Vocals / Acoustic Guitar

Read the story

Ella grew up between the North Queensland coast and her extended family's rural property, surrounded by tropical storms, cane country and long summer evenings. She began singing at local markets and community events before becoming a regular on the North Queensland pub circuit. She met Connor at a regional songwriters festival, where their contrasting voices immediately clicked. Her melodic instincts and lyrical perspective added another dimension to Heartland Valley.

Warm, strong and fearless. Ella brings harmony, emotional clarity and a distinctly North Queensland character to the band. She moves naturally from intimate acoustic passages to powerful shared choruses while keeping the band's conversational storytelling intact.

Jax Turner

Jax Turner

Lead Guitar / Backing Vocals

Read the story

Jax was raised around station life in western Queensland. Mostly self-taught, he learned guitar by wearing out old records and playing along after work. He spent years on the road in rock, blues and country pub bands, developing a style that mixes country picking with gritty blues and rock leads. After crossing paths with Heartland Valley at a charity show, he became the missing edge in the band's live sound.

Loyal, observant and dryly funny. Jax lets the guitar do most of the talking. His stage presence is understated until a solo arrives, when he becomes one of Heartland Valley's most commanding performers.

Matt “Booma” Harris

Matt “Booma” Harris

Bass Guitar / Backing Vocals

Read the story

Booma grew up in a sugar-cane town and spent time working in the mines before music became more than a weekend escape. Known for turning almost any gathering into a jam session, he built a reputation as a dependable bass player with an instinct for groove. He met Jax at a charity gig and later joined Heartland Valley when the group needed someone who could anchor both its country ballads and bigger pub-rock moments.

Easygoing, funny and dependable. Booma keeps the band grounded musically and personally. Off stage he is usually the first to crack a joke; on stage he supplies the steady low-end pulse that gives the songs their weight.

Ricky Cole

Ricky Cole

Drums / Percussion

Read the story

Ricky spent years driving trucks before taking music seriously, learning drums later than most professional players. That working-life background became one of his strengths: he understands the people and places Heartland Valley writes about because he has lived among them. After years playing pub bands and regional events, he joined the group and brought a steady, no-fuss rhythmic backbone.

Relaxed away from the kit and relentless behind it. Ricky is the band's road-tested veteran: practical, dependable and always ready with a story. He brings a family atmosphere to the group and a muscular live groove to the music.
